Wildplukken, de Alternatieve Fruittuin – een review

Met twee ouders die bioloog zijn, is mij kennis over de natuur met de paplepel ingegoten. Als klein meisje ging ik zelfs vaak mee op veldexcursies en leerde ik al jong over verschillende eetbare bessen die je zo in de natuur kon vinden. Er zijn zelfs foto’s of dia’s van mij als 2 à 3-jarige, kraaibessen plukkend en etend op Terschelling.


Het verzamelen van eetbare dingen uit de natuur is de laatste jaren steeds meer in opkomst, maar lang niet iedereen heeft zo’n achtergrond als ik natuurlijk en daarvoor is het handig dat er boeken op de markt verschijnen zoals het boek Wildplukken, de Alternatieve Fruittuin van Peter Kouwenhoven en Barbara Peters.

De afgelopen jaren heb ik al meerdere van dit soort boeken in handen gehad, allemaal even informatief en interessant, maar geen een vond ik zo praktisch en eenvoudig van opzet als deze en vooral ook zo geschikt voor gebruik met kinderen.

 

Wildplukken mét de Kids

Terwijl ik het aan het lezen was en ik af en toe een leuk weetje aan de kinderen voorlas, zat mijn zoon al in mijn nek te hijgen, omdat hij wilde dat ik stopte met lezen, zodat hij het zelf kon gaan lezen. Hij was vooral geïnteresseerd in het gedeelte over het weer en hoe je aan het gedrag van verschillende dieren kunt zien wat voor weer er opkomst is.

Het leuke van het boek is dat er naast de algemene informatie over het plukken van vruchten en noten in het wild en de praktische tips waar je rekening mee moet houden, er in de kantlijnen ook allerlei extra leuke weetjes in informatie staat. Er is zelfs een lijstje met toepasselijke (klassieke) muziek!

Inhoud

In het eerste deel van het boek wordt behandeld wat je allemaal mee kunt nemen als je op pad gaat, waar je op moet letten tijdens het plukken, zoals brandnetels en stekende of bijtende insecten en andere dieren.

Wat zijn de andere kapers op de kust, oftewel welke dieren zijn jouw concurrenten als het om wildplukken gaat en wat zijn vruchten nu eigenlijk precies en hoe ontstaan ze.

Allemaal helder en beknopt beschreven en gelardeerd met foto’s en tekeningetjes en leuke weetjes.

Het tweede deel beschrijft de verschillende vruchten en noten en krijg je een aantal recepten bij elke soort die je hier zou kunnen vinden. Dit deel is weer opgedeeld in verschillende delen:

  • Voor de vruchten die de moeite waard zijn om voor om te fietsen met voor elk 5 recepten
  • De lekkere vruchten met elk drie recepten.
  • Mwah vruchten, eetbaar maar niet de lekkerste met ieder een recept.

Gevolgd door een hoofdstuk dat natuurlijk niet mocht ontbreken: vruchten die niet eetbaar zijn of zelfs giftig.


Smaken verschillen

Met de indeling ben ik het niet helemaal eens. Bijvoorbeeld de dauwbraam bij de ‘mwah vruchten’ vind ik een beetje een onderwaardering. Wij smullen ieder jaar weer van de jam die mijn schoonmoeder maakt van deze bramen.

Zelf mag ik ze ook graag plukken en van snoepen onderwijl. Als je een goede plek hebt gevonden, kun je in een avond toch aardig wat kilo’s ervan plukken. En als je gaat voor alleen de grote en goed rijpe, zijn ze echt niet te zuur, maar heerlijk!

Het seizoen is weer geopend, we mogen weer en masse de duinen in. Helaas zijn ze er nog niet volop, dus wacht ik nog even eer ik mijn toch al overvolle vriezers volstouw.

Ook verbaasde het me dat de Bergthee (Gaultheria procumbens) bij niet-eetbaar staat. Op de site van Permacultuur Nederland staat juist dat dat deze wel degelijk eetbaar is. Om die reden heb ik er vorig jaar 1 op mijn tuin geplant, maar ik heb er nog niet de vruchten van geplukt, dus nog geen ervaring zelf ermee.

Bij de Mahonie is een waarschuwing op zijn plaats, volgens de permacultuur site Plants for a Future:

Barberry, goldenseal, oregon grape and other plants containing Berberine should be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Avoid if over active thyroid gland. High doses cause vomiting, lowered blood pressure, reduced heart rate, lethargy, nose bleed, skin & eye irritation and kidney infection. Liquorice as Glycyrrhiza species nullify berberine effects.

De recepten

Wildplukken

Het was deze keer voor mij niet te doen om een recept uit te kiezen dat ik kon maken. Veel recepten zijn met suiker en granen. Nu kan ik daar meestal wel een GAPS-dieet draai aan geven, maar het moet natuurlijk  ook maar net de tijd zijn dat de vruchten rijp zijn om te plukken. Bovendien woon ik ook nog eens in een gebied waar behalve vlier, duindoorn, braam en rozenbottels niet veel te plukken valt.

Een Fruittuin beginnen

En omdat hier in het wild in de buurt weinig te scoren valt en omdat ik een eetbare bostuin wilde creëren, ben ik zelf maar begonnen allerlei eetbare planten in mijn tuin te zetten. En dat is grappig, want ook in het boek Wildplukken staat een deel over het zelf aanplanten van een fruittuin. Bijna alle voorbeelden die er instaan, heb ik op mijn tuin geplant of zitten in de planning!

En nu ik het hier toch over heb: dit gaat een nieuw onderwerp worden op de Voedzame Keuken: de eetbare bostuin, permacultuur en moestuinieren, omdat dit zo nauw verweven is met voeding.

In het boek zit ook nog een handige uitvouwbare Wildplukkaart waarop je alle delicatessen met bijbehorende oogsttijd, groeiplaats en toepassing in een oogopslag kunt vinden. Handig om bij je te steken als je op pad gaat!

 

Kortom

Een leuk en praktisch boek om vooral lekker samen met de kinderen mee op pad te gaan en te ontdekken wat voor eetbaars er allemaal in de buurt of onderweg te vinden is en als je dat niet kunt vinden, kun je altijd zelf nog aan de slag in je eigen tuin natuurlijk, al is dat dan niet meer echt ‘wildplukken’ te noemen…
