Weet Wat je Eet, een review met winactie!

Al eens gehoord van de Melksalon? Ergens vorig jaar hoorde ik daar voor het eerst van. Er zou ergens in Amsterdam een melkproeverij zijn van melk van verschillende boeren. Toen bij navraag bleek dat het om gepasteuriseerde melk ging, heb ik besloten niet te gaan.

In maart dit jaar echter was er bij Mediametic, wederom een melksalon, nu met rauwe melk! Helaas zat ik toen net met die frozen shoulder, dat feestje ging dus niet door, maar in april had ik de herkansing.

Van vijf verschillende boeren uit de omgeving van Amsterdam kregen wij als publiek de melk te proeven.

En echt, hoewel vaak nauwelijks waarneembaar, maar er was echt verschil in smaak. Welke lekkerder was, kan ik niet zeggen, ze waren anders, maar de een niet lekkerder dan de ander…

Er was ook een proefpanel. Op de site van Mediametic worden die voorgesteld. Zo leerde ik Daan de Wit kennen en maakte ik kennis met zijn pas uitgekomen boek Weet Wat je Eet.

Een boek, in het Nederlands, waar rauwe melk, Weston A. Price en zelfs Ramiel Nagel van het boek Genees Tandbederf in voorkomen. Daar moest ik achteraan natuurlijk!

Van de uitgever kreeg ik zelfs twee exemplaren, een om hier weg te geven. Daar straks meer over.

 

Thuiskomen

Mijn eigen exemplaar nam ik mee naar de camping waar we een regenachtig weekend hadden en geen internet en ik las het bijna in een ruk uit!

Voor mij niet zozeer omdat het allemaal nieuw was, integendeel haast, maar omdat het hier nu eens allemaal zo mooi bij elkaar stond. Het was thuiskomen! Al die informatie die ik de afgelopen jaren verzameld had door van alles en nog wat te lezen in boeken en op sites, stond hier prachtig overzichtelijk opgeschreven!

Het was ook goed om gewoon bepaalde dingen weer eens te lezen. En uiteraard stonden er ook voor mij nieuwe dingen in.

 

Mooi en Informatief

Het eerste wat opvalt, als je het boek ziet, is het formaat, de dikke kartonnen kaft en de vormgeving van het binnenwerk. Ze hebben een mooi boek van weten te maken van ruim 275 pagina’s dik. Mooi vormgegeven tekst afgewisseld met veelal mooie afbeeldingen.

Omdat Daan de Wit bepaald niet over een nacht ijs is gegaan met zijn onderzoek, is besloten de bronnen van het boek apart op de site van het boek te zetten, in plaats van in het boek zelf, dat scheelde weer flink wat pagina’s. Groot voordeel daarvan is dat die links dan aanklikbaar zijn!

Op de site van het boek vind je bovendien nog een vijftal extra hoofdstukken die wat dieper ingaan op de materie. Je kunt daar dus al een heel goede indruk van het boek krijgen.

Tijdens het lezen viel ik van de ene herkenning in de andere, want zoals ik al zei is het grotendeels geen nieuwe kost. Het boek staat echt bomvol met informatie en ik kan me voorstellen dat wanneer dit allemaal nieuw is voor je, je na het lezen misschien een beetje overweldigd bent.

 

Heilige Huisjes vallen om

Veel van die voedingsadviezen, waar je waarschijnlijk mee opgegroeid bent, kunnen wat Daan de Wit zo de prullenbak in. Dat kan je natuurlijk nogal overdonderen, maar als je al wat meer op de hoogte bent, omdat je hier bijvoorbeeld al een tijdje meeleest, dan zul je vooral blij zijn met de bevestigingen die er in staan. Het boek geeft je dan juist vooral meer achtergrond en verdieping.

Werkelijk alles komt aan bod: Waarom verzadigd vet niet slecht is, wat er mis is met wat je hebt geleerd over cholesterol, waarom de in vet oplosbare vitamines zo belangrijk zijn, waarom dierlijke producten grasgevoerd zouden moeten zijn, rauwe melk en ja, ook mijn stokpaardje: fermenteren!

Tegen het einde van het boek zet Daan de Wit een aantal bekende diëten op een rij en laat daar zien wat deze voor je kunnen doen:

  • Paleo
  • Raw food
  • Ayurveda
  • Het Mediterrane dieet en LCHF (low carb high fat)

Het mooie van dit deel vind ik, dat dit meteen de nadruk op low carb – die in de rest van het boek een beetje naar voren komt –  naar beneden haalt. Vooral in het hoofdstuk Raw food wordt dat mooi aangegeven door Denise Minger:

In 2014 gebeurt er iets interessants: Denise Minger zegt ‘sorry’ [zie het filmpje op Youtube]. Ze doet dat een half jaar na het verschijnen van haar boek. Daarin pleit ze voor voeding van dierlijke oorsprong omdat haar duidelijk was geworden, onder meer door het werk van Weston Price, dat dergelijke voeding gezond is. Op een voedingsconferentie maakt ze daarop een nuance. Ze is er namelijk achter gekomen dat je ook als vegetariër gezond kunt zijn. Dat is een opvallende uitspraak, zeker afkomstig van Minger, die veganist was, maar door die levensstijl ernstige klachten ontwikkelde, waaronder zestien gaatjes in haar gebit in een jaar tijd, als gevolg van tekorten in de voeding. Ze schakelde over naar de Price-stijl van eten en werd weer beter. Toch komt ze nu dus met een nieuwe visie op vegetarisme en hoe deze manier van voeden ook tot gezondheid kan leiden. Minger pleit voor een genuanceerder visie op gezondheid: we zijn allemaal anders, hebben bijvoorbeeld ieder onze eigen genetische achtergrond, hebben een verschillende lichamelijke conditie en mogelijk spelen de gevolgen van de verschillen tussen mannen en vrouwen mee. Niet iedereen zal het even goed doen op een dieet dat zich kenmerkt door voeding van dierlijke oorsprong met veel verzadigd vet.[…]

Volgens Minger leiden er dus meerdere wegen naar gezondheid, zolang je daar maar duidelijke keuzes in maakt die goed bij je eigen unieke gesteldheid passen. Al is het volgens haar voor vegetariërs wel veel ingewikkelder om gezond te zijn, aangezien zij de voedingsstoffen die zo rijkelijk aanwezig zijn in dierlijke producten moeten ontberen en van elders zullen moeten halen.

Dit vond ik misschien wel het mooiste stuk uit het boek, omdat het precies verwoordt hoe ik er insta!

 

De Tao van Gezond Leven

In het laatste deel van het boek worden de moderne problemen met betrekking tot onze gezondheid nog weer even aangehaald. En wordt er gekeken naar de oorzaken aan de hand van de Australische professor Garry Egger, die een nauw verband ziet tussen economische groei, de groei in omvang van de moderne mens (obesitas) en de groei van het aantal (ontstekingen gerelateerde) welvaartsziekten.

Het boek zou niet af zijn zonder tips hoe dan wel, wat dan wel en die ontbreken dan ook niet uiteraard!

 

Kortom

Een mooi, lijvig boek, zeer rijk aan informatie met een enorme diversiteit aan geraadpleegde bronnen, al wordt Gary Taubes wel wat veel aangehaald naar mijn zin.

Absoluut de moeite waard voor wie zich al een tijd verdiept heeft in gezonde voeding, dan is het een boek van thuiskomen en van verdieping.

Kom je juist net kijken en begin je je net te verdiepen in gezonde voeding, dan kan Weet Wat je Eet een geweldige introductie zijn, maar laat je niet overdonderen door de enorme hoeveelheid informatie! Uiteindelijk kun je alles stapje voor stapje in je leven gaan invoeren. De Voedzame Keuken kan je daar weer bij helpen!

  1. Wel brood, geen brood, wel of geen vlees: Door al die verschillende adviezen de laatste tijd zie ik door de bomen het bos niet meer, ben ik de weg een beetje kwijt geraakt. Zo te horen kan dit boek wat meer richting geven, is het allemaal niet zo zwart-wit. Ik zou het dan ook graag winnen.

  3. Leuk, lijkt me een nuttig en leerzaam boek. Het kan nog altijd gezonder, bewuster en beter. ?

  5. Er zijn hier veel discussies in huis over wat nou echt goed of niet goed voor je is qua voeding. Vooral sinds dochterlief van 15 veganistisch is gaan eten. Er staan wel meerdere boeken over eten maar als ik iets nodig heb om een stelling te onderbouwen, kan ik uiteraard zelden vinden, waar dat stukje nou ook al weer stond. Alles op een rijtje zou zeer welkom zijn 🙂

    • Dat is nogal een overgang, helemaal veganistisch, Katrin! Wat zijn haar beweegredenen? Kan zij wel gluten verdragen?

      • Zij heeft filmpjes op internet gezien over de zuivel- en vleesindustrie (meestal Amerikaans natuurlijk) en wil geen deel meer uitmaken van het dierenleed, wat ze daar tegen kwam. Ergens vindt ze het ook wel stoer denk ik. Ze is ook echt niet meer over te halen een eitje te eten van kippen die vrij buiten in het gras lopen. Dat vind ik erg jammer. We hebben wel afgesproken, dat zij na een jaar bloed moet laten prikken om te weten, of ze geen tekorten heeft opgelopen. En ja, zij kan gluten eten. Heeft wel voor de helft de genetische aanleg voor coeliakie maar op het moment nergens last van (geen verhoogde antistoffen in het bloed)

        • Forks over Knives zeker? Ik ken er meer die n.a.v. die film o.a. veganist zijn geworden… Lastig hoor, lijkt me! Goed plan om bloed te laten prikken. Nu zegt alleen zo’n bloedtest ook niet alles, maar inderdaad goed in de gaten blijven houden hoe ze zich ontwikkeld en hoe ze zich voelt.
          Wellicht hebben jullie iets aan dit boek. Het schijnt heel compleet te zijn, want juist als vegetariër en dus helemaal als veganist moet je goed in de gaten blijven houden dat je al je voedingsstoffen genoeg binnen krijgt!

          • Zij heeft ‘cowspiracy’ gezien. Ik zal naar dat boek kijken. Ken je het zelf?

            • O ja, dat is er ook zo een inderdaad! Ik heb het boek wel eens in handen gehad in de winkel, maar ik heb het niet uitgebreid kunnen bekijken, laat staan lezen. Ik zou het wel graag willen hebben!

  6. ben zelf net begonnen aan Mochael Pollan’s “Handleiding echt eten”.
    Hij stelt dat we door voedings industrie en goeroes in de war gebracht worden.
    weten wat we eten en ook uit kunnen spreken wat we eten maakt het allemaal veel simpeler.

    Eet echt eten. Niet te veel. Vooral planten.

    Ik mag graag mijn eigen conclusies trekken vandaar dat ik ook graag “Weet wat je eet” aan mijn bibliotheekje toe voeg

  7. Ik behoor tot de eerste categorie: ik ben al redelijk goed geïnformeerd wat betreft gezonde pure voeding. Met name een natuurarts heeft mij de nodige kennis bijgebracht. Daarnaast lees ik heel veel op internet, met een zeer kritisch oog. En relevante boeken heb ik ook in mijn bezit. Dit te winnen boek lijkt me een waardevolle aanvulling. Om nog eens wat kennis op te halen en hopelijk ook om die nog wat aan te vullen (zal best lukken). Melk drink ik trouwens in principe niet (er wil in een incidenteel geval weleens een cappuccino of zo doorheen glippen, vandaar dat “in principe”).

    • Hi Anita, Mag ik je vragen waarom je geen melk drinkt, gewoon nieuwsgierig? Is dat omdat je lactose overgevoelig bent, of juist caseïne of geloof je dat het gewoon niet goed voor je is of?

  8. Sinds kort proberen we hier in huis op te letten met wat we eten, we zijn begonnen met de kant & klaar zakjes te vervangen voor vers. Soms is dat best nog moeilijk want wat is wel goed en wat niet, wat past bij elkaar en wat niet… maar elke stap is er 1 richting de goede weg en misschien mag dit boek ons daar wel bij gaan helpen

  9. Dag Iris. Als dit boek echt is zo als je het hebt beschreven, dan wil ik graag zo’n exemplaar in huis. Ik heb heus een boek nodig dat me wat wijser maakt over “gezond eten”. Ik kom vaak – zeer vaak – tegenstrijdige opinies tegen dat ik het op d’een duur niet meer weet. Wordt er soms onnozel van.Dus ja, zo’n boek in huis is meer dan welkom ?

  10. Ik ben ook zo iemand die ondertussen al heel veel weet over “goed ” eten, en niet meer de traditionele richtlijnen volgt. Maar het lukt me nog niet helemaal om alles in het dagelijkse leven toe te passen.
    Dit boek, en dan vooral de tips erin, Zouden heel welkom zijn!

  11. Een vriendin van mij vertelde vorige week dat zij met haar gezin gezonder wil gaan eten. Ik zou haar graag dit boek cadeau willen doen, dan kan zij het over 4 weken op de camping op haar gemak doorspitten!

    Door al mijn rijpe avocado’s ben ik vanavond voor het eerst op jouw blog gekomen, bij het avocado ijs, om precies te zijn. Dat ijs maken wordt hem vanavond niet meer (gelukkig is het morgen ook nog warm buiten), want ik bleef maar op je blog hangen. Ik vind het enorm leuk om dingen te leren over voeding en heb er vanavond ook weer eea bijgeleerd. Bedankt daarvoor! Fermenteren staat al lang op mijn lijstje van dingen die ik nog heel graag wil doen, maar dat is nu ook iets wat ik zeker snel wil proberen in mijn vakantieperiode. Iets anders wat ik heel graag zou willen doen is natuurlijk “Weet wat je eet” lezen, want ik denk dat ik daarover nog heel veel niet weet. Je bent zelf erg enthousiast over het boek en het klinkt als eentje die je gewoon moet hebben. Ik ben meer iemand die zich makkelijk laat beïnvloeden door gezondheidsgoeroe’s en ik denk dat dit boek mij goed zou helpen om beter zelf afwegingen te maken over goede voeding.

    Ps. Het is al even geleden, maar ik las je post over kokosrepen. Zelf haal ik altijd santen gewoon bij de AH (xl). Ze hebben daar zelfs 2 soorten 🙂

    Wat een leuke winactie!
    De afgelopen twee jaar zit ik dagelijks achter de computer …en probeer diverse dingen uit tot nu toe zonder resultaat.
    Mijn gezondheid is niet best en ik zou zo graag verbetering willen!

    Dit boek lijkt me een prachtig naslagwerk wat ik vor mezelf niet kan kopen.

    Het lijkt me geweldig dit te winnen, zeker omdat ik intussen redelijk radeloos ben!

  14. Jaaaaaa, ik wil dit boek!
    Ik ben al een tijdje aan het zoeken naar de gezonde leefstijl voor mij en mijn zoontje en ik ben zelfs gestart met een thuisstudie: voedingsdeskundige. Ook omdat ik uiteindelijk andere mensen verder wil helpen om zich goed te voelen. De motivatie voor de studie kan ik alleen niet meer vinden, omdat ik qua gezondheid gas terug moet nemen en de visie van de cursus niet bij mij aansluit (de schijf van 5). Zou dit boek het volgende stapje zijn in mijn zoektocht?

    Ik ben regelmatig op jou mooie, informatieve blog te vinden. Verder lees ik veel over voeding en tref ook vaak tegenstrijdige berichten aan. Wat te doen hiermee? Ik weet het niet. Vooral als ik mijn kinderen wil overtuigen om anders tegen voeding aan te kijken, en te eten. Waarom waarom waarom…
    Dit lijkt mij een geweldig boek om bevestiging te vinden en mijn kennis te verbreden en verdiepen.
    Maar dat doe ik ook al op jou blog haha.

    Na het lezen van jouw recensie ben ik heel enthousiast geworden over dit boek, het lijkt mij heel interessant. Ik probeer al jaren gezond te eten, maar heb het gevoel dat ik elke keer op het verkeerde been wordt gezet over wat wel en wat niet gezond is. Het lijkt mij heerlijk om een boek te hebben waar alles op een rijtje wordt gezet en dat duidelijkheid geeft. Mijn jongste dochter eet vegetarisch en dat vind ik soms nog wel moeilijk in onze eetstijl in te passen. Niet dat wij veel vlees eten, maar meer om goede vervanging te vinden zodat ze genoeg voedingsstoffen binnen krijgt. Hopelijk Kan ik via dit boek meer inzicht krijgen voor gezonde voeding voor het hele gezin.

  17. Ik zou het boek wel willen: al die goede info bij elkaar in een mooi boek! Al weet ik al wel veel (denk ik), toch is er altijd weer wat nieuws te leren.

  18. Wat een leuke actie! Ik zou het boek heel graag willen hebben! Ik ben sinds een half jaar aan het proberen om gezond te eten mede met de tips van dit blog. Ik ben meteen begonnen met groenten fermenteren en tegenwoordig heb ik een kombucha in een tapvat en staat er een potje melkkefir in de kelder. Ik ben 15 kilo afgevallen zonder enige moeite en zonder honger want er is zo veel dat wel goed voor je is om te eten. Hoewel de informatie hier op het blog best uitgebreid is zou ik heel graag meer willen leren om nog gezonder te kunnen worden. Ik ben ook heel erg benieuwd waarom bepaalde dingen juist wel goed voor je zijn. Mensen vragen me vaak waarom ik bepaalde dingen wel en niet eet en het lijkt me fijn om precies uit te kunnen leggen waarom. Fingers crossed!

  19. Ik zou dat boek goed kunnen gebruiken. 5 jaar geleden ben ik met mn gezin gezonder gaan eten, dus zonder de pakjes en zakjes. Langzamerhand meer en meer gaan onderzoeken, geen geraffineerde suiker en zo min mogelijk bewerkt voedsel gaan eten. Het hele gezin (5) doet mee, al gaan de oudere (20 en 18) een beetje hun eigen gang, toch kan ik ze wel wat overbrengen. Een paar weken geleden heeft mijn man een hartinfarct gekregen, (hij is 50). En dan zijn er vragen, ook van anderen “Hoe kan dat, jullie eten altijd zo gezond”. Ik leg me er niet bij neer, dat men zegt, “domme pech, hij heeft aanleg en werkt al 25 jaar in ploegendienst”. Juist nu is het zaak om nog meer te kijken, wat we allemaal eten, vooral omdat in het ziekenhuis nog steeds de traditionele diëten worden voorgeschreven ” neem becel, geen roomboter” . Omdat ik eigenlijk van alle diëten een beetje weet en eet, zou een duidelijk geschreven boek echt voor ons een eyeopener zijn.

  20. Je bent verrast dat melk van verschillende boeren verschillend smaken kan? Na een paar keer vakantie op de boerderij weet ik, dat je de verzorging van de koe proeft. Dat je al aan de stal kan zien of de melk wel of niet lekker zal zijn. Maar melk is taboe gebleken om de melkeiwitten, evenals gluten, gluten-look-a-likes als haver & boekweit en soja, plus nog wat minder lastige intoleranties, zoals voor paprika en uien en ik heb geen idee hoe ik nu nog voedzaam en verantwoord eten moet.
    Het meelezen op een paar gezondheidsblogs leerde me dat je er niet bent met granen een half uur inweken, wat ik in de jaren ’90 leerde, om het fytinezuur af te zwakken. Het moet minstens 4 uur èn er moet iets van fytase door, bijvoorbeeld een schepje tarwebloem erbij. En niet alleen granen, maar ook peulvruchten en noten. Misschien moet dat echt, ook al ben je met dat grondige weken en spoelen een deel van de in water oplosbare vitamines en overige nutriënten kwijt, maar Ik vind het onuitvoerbaar en heb het in zijn geheel opgegeven,. Fermenteren wil ik nog wel een keer proberen.
    Het boek dat uitleg geeft en verschillende diëten toelicht, waarmee je ondanks de vele bomen het bos weer kan zien, lijkt me zeer nuttig.

    • Nou verrast niet natuurlijk, het is logisch, maar het is grappig om dat zo te proeven, allemaal biologisch werkende boeren, maar allemaal op een andere plek rondom Amsterdam, met andere grond, wellicht ook niet allemaal dezelfde rassen koeien, net weer ander voer etc.
      De melk die wij van onze boer hebben, smaakt ook altijd weer anders. Nu hij een nieuwe stal en nieuw melksysteem heeft niet zo duidelijk meer, want nu krijgen we niet meer de melk van 1 of 2 koeien, maar van alle koeien gemengd uit de tank. Maar toch, zomer en winter is ook weer anders bijvoorbeeld!
      Waarom vind je dat weken onuitvoerbaar, Stella? Doe je het nu niet en eet je ze gewoon wel, of sla je ze daarom over en eet je meer volgens paleo om die reden?
      En ja, de in water oplosbare vitamines, die kun je denk ik ook beter uit groenten en fruit halen, dan uit granen en peulvruchten.

      • Sorry, vergeten om te antwoorden.
        Heb er de energie niet voor en was toch al nooit een keukentalent. Dus het is een compromis wat ik doe. Een half uur weken is te doen, minimaal 4 uren betekent uit het oog verliezen en dagen later tegenkomen. Er moet ook iets door wat fytasehoudend is. De meeste fytasehouders vallen al af door gluten of gluten-look-a-likes. Dus wordt het dan meestal zilvervliesrijst die voorgekookt zal zijn gezien de geringe gaartijd.

        Paleo is nog veel meer werk (en geld). Ik heb na jaren tobben besloten om al die diëten te laten zitten en zien hoever ik kom met weglaten en de twijfelachtige producten als genoemde zilvervliesrijst te eten.

        • Tja, je moet natuurlijk doen waar je je goed bij voelt en als je stress krijgt, omdat het teveel gedoe en werk is of teveel geld kost, dan schiet je er waarschijnlijk ook niet veel mee op…

  21. Dit boek lijkt me echt wat voor mij: ben bezig om zo gezond mogelijk te eten, en info is daarvoor wel heel belangrijk.

  22. Gezond leven in het algemeen en gezonde voeding in het bijzonder, heeft sowieso altijd mijn interesse. Ik heb er al veel over gelezen en ben inmiddels ook redelijk op de hoogte. Maar er valt nog veel te leren en te verbeteren. Op melk (in het algemeen) heb ik het niet zo, eerlijk gezegd. Maar wellicht herzie ik mijn mening bij het lezen van dit boek.

      • Ik heb mijn mening inderdaad herzien na lezen van diverse artikelen.
        Melk uit e winkel: misschien beter niet doen.
        Melk bij de boer recht van de graszende koe en thuis direct pasteuriseren (dus niet koken, zoals vroeger gebeurde) valt te overwegen. Alleen is zulke melk hier niet bijnen mijn fietsbereikje verkrijgbaar. Dus niet.

        De koeien die ik zag bij de vakantieboerderijen, stonden de hele dag op stal, valt me nu in. Maar de meeste koestallen die ik zag, waren paleisjes vergeleken bij de varkensstallen.

    post titles to grab viewers to click. You might add a
    related video or a related pic or two to grab readers interested about everything’ve written.
    In my opinion, it could make your posts a little livelier.
