Superfoods Bestaan Toch!

Een half jaar geleden was er nogal wat commotie in voedingsland, want het voedingscentrum haalde fel uit tegen de zogenaamde superfoods. Superfoods zouden niet bestaan, want niet wetenschappelijk onderbouwd, en zouden slechts een marketing truc zijn.

 

Health Food Bloggers in de Verdediging

Veel bekende health food bloggers zoals Jesse van der Velde, Juglen Zwaan van aHealthylife.nl en Miss Natural schoten meteen in de verdediging.

Juglen doet dat onder andere door hardnekkige stellingen van het voedingscentrum zelf onderuit te halen, hoezo “De waarheid op tafel“? En inderdaad is het gewoon te zot voor woorden wat ze je vanuit de overheid (?) proberen voor te liegen wat allemaal wel en niet gezond zou zijn…

Gelukkig zijn ze er daar nu zelf ook wel achter dat onze schijf van vijf hopeloos achterhaald is en schijnt deze op de schop te gaan. Hoe dat uitpakt, moeten we nog afwachten, ik verwacht er niet al te veel van, eerlijk gezegd…

 

Jesse van der Velde

Jesse legt uit wat superfoods zijn en waarom verschillende wel degelijk goed voor je zijn. Hoewel hij zegt dat onder de de superfoods niet alleen “exotische” voedingsmiddelen, zoals kokosolie en gojibessen vallen, maar ook groente- en fruitsoorten die wij allemaal kennen en dagelijks eten.

Als voorbeeld noemt hij vervolgens zoet aardappel, blauwe bessen, kool en broccoli. Kool en broccoli (ook een koolachtige) alla, maar dagelijks, kool? In de vorm van zuurkool misschien nog wel, maar anders? Mwaw…

Blauwe bessen? Je kent ze waarschijnlijk wel, maar hoe vaak eet je die nou? Als ze er al liggen in de winkel, zijn ze onbetaalbaar meestal. Het is nou niet iets dat ik een dagelijks product zou noemen.

En zoete aardappel is toch echt een heuse exoot, al eens geprobeerd deze buiten in de tuin te kweken? Gaat je niet lukken hoor, het is hier veel te koud en nat… En dagelijks eet ik deze ook niet, maar zo nu en dan, ze zijn me wederom veel te prijzig en echt lekker vind ik ze trouwens ook niet.

Grappig ook dat hij juist de gojibes als exoot aanduidt, deze kun je (verwilderd weliswaar) hier in het duin vinden, gewoon als boksdoorn. Wat er ook zelden bij wordt gezegd, is dat gojibessen uit dezelfde vermaledijde familie komen als de aardappel en tomaat, nachtschade dus, dat je het even weet!

In haar blog artikel “Noem het Superfood en dan zijn granen ineens weer gezond!” haalt Liesbeth Oerlemans menig stelling van Jesse onderuit. En dat alles maakt dat ik toch ook twijfel aan het nut van superfoods, als ze al bestaan…

 

Superfoods, bestaan ze wel?

Ik zeg het niet graag, maar ergens heeft het voedingscentrum wel gelijk…

Het is ook maar net wat je onder superfoods verstaat natuurlijk. Want waarom zouden deze nou voornamelijk uit verre landen moeten komen? Ze zijn dan misschien wel gezond en vol met bepaalde voedingsstoffen, maar voor het milieu is zoiets natuurlijk al wat minder gunstig?

Ook de Groene Vrouw vraagt zich (terecht) af in haar blog Superfoods bestaan niet wat deze foods nou zo super maakt, de betreffende voedingsstoffen zijn namelijk ook elders wel te vinden:

In je eigen achtertuin bijvoorbeeld, als je tenminste open staat voor het eten van onkruiden als Brandnetel, Vogelmuur, Paardebloem of Weegbree. Maar ja, dat is natuurlijk niet half zo sexy als een Noni, Chiazaadje of Mangostan uit het tropisch regenwoud van een subequatoriaal Ver Land… Het is wél een stuk goedkoper. Dat dan weer wel.

Overigens werd dit blog enkele maanden voor het artikel van het Voedingscentrum geschreven en was het dus zeker geen reactie daarop.

Wat nu precies wel en niet voor superfood doorgaat is niet helemaal duidelijk. Het Voedingscentrum zegt daarover het volgende:

Superfoods zijn voedingsmiddelen waarvan wordt gezegd dat ze een hoog gehalte aan voedingsstoffen of bioactieve stoffen bevatten, zoals vitamines, mineralen en antioxidanten. Aan superfoods worden positieve eigenschappen toegeschreven. Ze zouden het libido verhogen, hart- en vaatziekten voorkomen, helpen met afvallen of depressies en huidveroudering voorkomen of verminderen.

De term superfoods is niet wettelijk omschreven en mag door iedereen worden gebruikt. Omdat er geen officiële definitie is van superfood, geven mensen dit stempel aan uiteenlopende voedingsmiddelen die in samenstelling verschillen. Superfood heet soms supervoeding of supervoedsel. Het wordt ook wel specifieker supergroente of superfruit genoemd.

Ga je opzoek op internet naar superfoods, dan vind je talloze lijsten vol met exoten, zoals deze bijvoorbeeld, met daartussen soms wat meer gangbare en vaak goedkopere voedingsmiddelen, zoals deze.

 

Onverwachte Superfoods

De komende tijd zal ik een aantal voedingsmiddelen behandelen die je als superfood zou kunnen aanmerken, simpel weg omdat ze tjokvol met (bepaalde) voedingsmiddelen zitten. Het zullen voedingsmiddelen zijn die je nauwelijks in het soort rijtjes als hier boven genoemd zult tegenkomen en toch verdienen ze stuk voor stuk extra aandacht.

Het eerste voedingsmiddel dat ik zal behandelen is lever! Lever ja, in het volgende artikel zul je kunnen lezen waarom je lever als een superfood zou kunnen beschouwen en waarom dit een welkome aanvulling kan zijn op jouw dieet.

Geen fan van lever? Geen probleem, ik zal je ook tips geven hoe je dit toch kunt eten, zonder dat je braakneigingen krijgt.
