Koningskruid Basilicum en de 5 gezondheidsvoordelen

In deze serie over gezondheidsbevorderende kruiden en specerijen die niet mogen ontbreken in je keuken of waar je niet zonder kunt, is nu basilicum aan de beurt. Eerder zijn aanbod gekomen: kaneel, gember, tijm, oregano, kurkuma, zwarte peper en komijn.

Basilicum, er is geen ander keukenkruid dat zoveel aroma bevat als dit plantje. Het vindt zijn oorsprong in India, Afrika en Azië. Het is een van de oudste en meest populaire kruiden voor medicinaal gebruik en wordt ook vaak het ‘heilige kruid’ genoemd.

 

Koningskruid

Basilicum is familie van de muntplant, beide behoren tot de familie van Lamiaceae of het geslacht Ocimum.

De Latijnse naam is Ocimum basilicum.

De naam basilicum komt van het Griekse woord basilikos, wat koninklijk of koning betekent, vandaar dat het ook vaak ‘koningskruid’ genoemd wordt.

Ocimum is waarschijnlijk afgeleid van het Griekse woord ozein dat ‘ruiken’ betekent. Samengevoegd betekenen deze twee woorden dus zoiets als ‘koninklijke geur’. En dat klopt ook wel, want als er een geur is waarbij woorden tekortschieten, is het wel die van basilicum, zo complex en veelzijdig en ook steeds weer anders!

Er bestaan wel meer dan 60 verschillende soorten basilicum, elk weer met hun eigen aroma’s. Zo heb ik zelf bijvoorbeeld kaneel basilicum en ‘Mrs. Burns ‘Lemon’, je kunt wel raden waar die naar ruiken!

Basilicum is een kwetsbare, niet winterharde plant die veel zon, warmte en voeding nodig heeft om goed te kunnen groeien.

Afhankelijk van de soort en groeiomstandigheden wordt basilicum tussen de 30 en 100 cm. hoog.

Het is wel mogelijk om de plant zomers in Nederland buiten te laten groeien, maar pas sinds ik een kas heb, lukt het mij pas goed om basilicum te kweken.

Deze kan dan mooi tussen de tomatenplanten staan, want de plant schijnt de groei van tomaat te stimuleren.
Je kunt het hele jaar door verse basiliumplanten kopen, welke natuurlijk in een verlichtte kas gekweekt zijn.

 

Voedingswaarde

Verse basilicum heeft in verhouding qua voedingswaarden veel te bieden, maar je moet dan wel flinke hoeveelheden er van consumeren wil je hier echt profijt van hebben. Een paar blaadjes in een ovenschotel zal niet zo veel zoden aan de dijk zetten qua voedingswaarden, maar een flinke handvol in een pesto of salade Caprese kan je toch aardig wat aan voedingsstoffen opleveren.

Basilicum bevat allerlei mineralen in aanzienlijke hoeveelheden, zo bevat een portie van 100 gram verse blaadjes zo’n 160 mg aan calcium, 3,2 mg. ijzer en dat is 7,5% van je dagelijkse behoefte daaraan. Ook bevat het een indrukwekkende hoeveelheid kalium (480 mg), ruime hoeveelheden magnesium en mangaan en ook de hoeveelheden fosfor en zink zijn hoog.

Van de vitamines scoren vooral vitamine A (in de vorm van bèta-carotenen), B3 (Niancin), B6 en vitamine C hoog.

 

Geneeskracht

Het is vooral de geneeskracht van de plant waarom hij eeuwenlang gewaardeerd werd, het populair worden voor gebruik in de keuken is in vergelijking daarmee vrij recent te noemen.

Van oudsher werd basilicum toegepast bij huidproblemen, bij verkoudheden, en andere infecties, hoesten, hoofdpijn, misselijkheid en als insectenverdrijver, maar ook om om de geest te kalmeren en tevens de stemming te verbeteren.

Tegenwoordig zijn veel van deze toepassingen ook wetenschappelijk verklaard en weten we dus welke inhoudsstoffen zorgen voor bepaalde geneeskrachtige werkingen. Zie hier de top 5 van de gezondheidsvoordelen van basilicum:

  1. Basilicum is o.a. door de hoge hoeveelheid eugenol een uitstekende ontstekingsremmer en geschikt om bacteriën te doden en insecten te verdrijven.
  2. Goed voor het hart-en-vaatstelsel vanwege het hoge gehalte aan carotenoïden, antioxidanten die de cellen beschermen tegen de beschadigingen van de vrije radicalen. Bovendien zorgt de ruime hoeveelheid magnesium in basilicum voor een goede bloeddoorstroming en gezonde aderen.
  3. De antioxidanten in de vorm van flavonoïden en carotenoïden in basilicum beschermen het lichaam tegen sommige vormen van kanker.
  4. Verschillende essentiële oliën in basilicum zijn effectief bij de behandeling van een droge huid, acne en psoriasis.
  5. De looistoffen die in basilicum aanwezig zijn hebben een kiemdodende en wondhelende invloed op mond-, neus-, en maag-, darmslijmvliezen. Basilicum is daarom ook prima te gebruiken bij allerlei spijsverteringsstoornissen en ontstekingen in het maag-darmkanaal.

 

Niet overdrijven

Het is vooral de etherische olie die de sterkste werking heeft. Gebruik deze olie echter alleen onder begeleiding van een therapeut of arts, want je huid kan er allergisch op reageren en ook zwangeren schijnen te moeten oppassen. Bovendien bevat basilicum estragole een stof waarvan gedacht wordt dat deze kankerverwekkend zou zijn. Het vormt echter geen probleem het kruid regelmatig zomers in de keuken te gebruiken, gewoon niet gaan overdrijven!

 

Kopen en bewaren

pestoVerse basilicum verliest veel van zijn geur en smaak als je deze gaat drogen, kies daarom altijd liever voor verse basilicum. Heb je zelf een flinke oogst aan basilicum die je niet allemaal in een keer op kunt maken, dan kun je het teveel eventueel fijnsnijden en mengen met een goede kwaliteit olijfolie en deze in ijsblokjesvormen invriezen. Of maak er pesto van en vries in wat je niet meteen binnen een week op kunt maken.

Koop natuurlijk bij voorkeur biologische basilicum, de plantjes moeten frisgroen van kleur zijn zonder zwarte of gele plekken.

 

In de keuken
salade caprese

Twee heel bekende recepten met basilicum zijn natuurlijk pesto, de basilicum saus met olijfolie, pijnboompitten of andere noten en Parmezaanse kaas en een salade Caprese met tomaat en mozzarella, maar het is natuurlijk ook prima in allerlei andere gerechten te gebruiken.

Je kunt het prima toepassen in allerlei gerechten met tomaat, zoals tomatensoep, pizza’s en ovenschotels.

Ook kun je er prima een thee van zetten door enkele fijngehakte blaadjes 8 minuten in kokend water te laten trekken. Vooral prettig bij hoofdpijn, misselijkheid, keelpijn of darmproblemen.

Of laat eens een paar handjes blaadjes een paar weken in een fles rode wijn trekken, schijnt het libido ook nog te verhogen!
